Fall break at a cliffside hostel above the Ionian. Seven young travelers from different countries become a found family over four raucous days of drinking, music, volleyball, flirting, arguments, and late-night conversations. Hartai, a quietly unsettling Romanian traveler, moves in and out of the group and seems to know more than he says. On their final day he poses The Question, and asks each of them to answer while they are still twenty. At the time it feels like an unforgettable game. None of them believes the answer will ever matter.

The Years Between

1986–2016
Thirty years of adult life unfold across countries and continents. Careers take off and stall. Friendships stretch, marriages form and fail, children change priorities, and the group experiences creative success, illness, loss, regret, and reinvention. They stay connected in different ways, while annual cakes, recurring dreams, and occasional reminders of Corfu keep something of their youth quietly alive. The Question recedes into the background, but you feel it beneath the floorboards as the lives they would have to give up become richer, more complicated, and harder to leave.

The Choice

Thirty years later, Hartai brings them back together and the old hypothetical becomes real. The rules they agreed to at twenty still apply, but the people making the decision are no longer the carefree travelers who made the pact. They now have spouses, children, careers, regrets, obligations, and people they love. Some desperately want another beginning. Others cannot imagine abandoning the lives they built. Five will go back to twenty. Two will stay. The suspense is not simply who chooses what, but what each is willing to sacrifice once youth comes at a very real cost.
The shape: four raucous days, the long middle of life, and a decision that only becomes real after life has been lived.
