About the Novel

Most people have imagined being young again at some point. I wish I were back in college. I wish I could do it over. I wonder what I’d do differently. That is the heart of The Question.

Seven young travelers from different countries meet at the Pink Palace, a wild college-age hostel in Corfu, Greece, in 1986. Over four days, they form close friendships that last a lifetime. There they also meet Hartai, a mysterious Romanian traveler.

On their last day in Corfu, Hartai poses a seemingly hypothetical question they must answer while they are still twenty: if they could be twenty again thirty years from now, would they go back?

The story follows them through careers, marriages, families, friendship, success, failure, love, and loss. Thirty years later, Hartai reunites them and the question becomes real. Five will go back. Two will stay. By then, the answer is not about youth. It is about what each is willing to lose.

Beneath the premise

‘Would you go back?’ is never really a question about the past.

It asks whether you would keep the life you built — with all its love, compromise, achievement, and regret — or risk it for the possibility of a second beginning.

That readers remember the vivid, unfinished person they were at twenty.

That a semester abroad, an international journey, or one accidental friendship returns to them.

That they recognize something of their own adulthood in the long middle of Part II.

That the final choice feels dangerous because a life already lived is never weightless.
